Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located many other smeared cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior political figure commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
