The buzz about The Game Awards was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
